A Day in Omodos

If you have one day and want to understand Cypriot wine without spending it in the car, Omodos is the answer. It sits at around 800 metres in the Limassol wine villages, and several producers are within walking distance of the central square.

The village itself

Omodos is built around the Monastery of the Holy Cross, whose courtyard is open to visitors and worth the detour for the architecture alone. The cobbled main square is lined with tavernas and shops selling local produce — carob syrup, soutzoukos, dried fruit.

It is the most tourist-facing of the wine villages, which cuts both ways: more open on a weekday than its neighbours, but busier in high season. Early morning is calmer.

Wineries in and around the village

Several producers operate in or immediately around Omodos, ranging from long-established family houses to newer boutique operations. Because they are close together, Omodos is one of the few places in Cyprus where visiting more than one winery on foot is realistic.

The mountain winery of one of the island's oldest wine families also sits just outside the village, giving you a contrast between small-scale and large-scale production within a few kilometres.

Making a day of it

A workable shape for the day: arrive mid-morning, walk the village and the monastery before it warms up, visit a winery late morning, take a long lunch in the square, then a second winery in the afternoon.

Contact wineries ahead of your visit — most are small and staffing is not guaranteed without notice. Their phone numbers and email addresses are listed on their pages here.

Nearby

Koilani and Vasa Koilaniou are both a short drive away if you want to extend the trip, and Pera Pedi sits just to the north. All three are quieter than Omodos.

The road up towards Troodos and the higher Pitsilia villages continues from here, so Omodos also works as a first stop on a longer mountain route.
